Dr. Ida P. Rolf

Early Life & Education

Ida Pauline Rolf entered the world in New York City in 1896. She received her PhD in biochemistry from Columbia University in 1920 – a remarkable achievement for a woman at the time. She worked for twelve years at the Rockefeller Institute, conducting research in biochemistry and organic chemistry.

Development of Structural Integration

During the 1930s and 1940s, Ida Rolf began experimenting with the manipulation of the body's connective tissues – what we now call fascia. She discovered that systematic work with the myofascial system could transform the body's structure, and that such changes could produce profound and lasting effects on posture and movement, and on overall wellbeing.

She went on to develop Structural Integration, an original and scientifically grounded system of body restructuring and movement education. Structural Integration works to release the body's segments – legs, arms, torso, and others – from lifelong patterns of tension and bracing, allowing them to align more efficiently within the field of gravity. The general public knows this method of body education and hands-on manipulation mostly by the brand name Rolfing® Structural Integration.

Teaching and Legacy

Rolf began teaching her method – which she called Structural Integration – in the 1950s and 1960s. She taught at Esalen Institute and established the Rolf Institute of Structural Integration in Boulder, Colorado in 1971. She continued teaching until shortly before her death in 1979.

Today, multiple schools around the world carry her work on, among them the European Guild for Structural Integration, which preserves the original ten-session recipe exactly as she developed it.

Those schools carry different names – some her surname, some not. The names and lineage of the work traces where each one came from, and why this Guild kept the title Ida Rolf gave her first school in 1967.
